Golf Polo vs. Tennis Polo: What's Actually Different?

A polo is a polo, right? Not quite. If you have ever worn a golf polo through three sets of singles, you already know something was off. Here is what actually separates the two, and how to pick.

Weight is the biggest difference

Golf polos tend to run heavier — ours sit at 210 GSM. That weight is deliberate. Golf is four to five hours of walking with long stretches of standing around, often in wind. A heavier knit holds its shape, resists wrinkling in the cart, and looks presentable when you walk into the clubhouse afterward.

Tennis polos run lighter with more stretch. A match is short bursts of explosive movement, and you want fabric that moves with the shoulder on a serve rather than resisting it. Our stretch-collar tennis polos use a different blank for exactly this reason.

The collar tells you a lot

A traditional three-button golf collar is structured. It stands up, it stays put, and it reads as course-appropriate at clubs with a dress code. Tennis collars are usually softer and often stretch-knit, because a stiff collar that flips up mid-rally is an annoyance nobody needs.

Cut and length

Golf polos are cut a little longer so they stay tucked through a full swing. Tennis polos are typically shorter and trimmer, since most players are not tucking in anyway and extra fabric just gets in the way.

Can you wear one for the other?

Honestly, yes — plenty of people do, and nobody is going to stop you. But if you play both sports regularly, the difference shows up around hour two. A golf polo on a hot tennis court feels heavy. A tennis polo on a windy course feels thin.

What to look for either way

• Stretch content. Look for spandex in the blend. Ours run 88% polyester, 12% spandex.
• Print method. Sublimated prints will not crack or peel. Screen prints eventually will.
• Wrinkle resistance. Matters more than people expect, especially if the shirt lives in a golf bag.
• Size range. A brand that only goes to XL is telling you something about who they design for.
